Boldness is in Our DNA by Actor & Director Katherine Brooks
By Katherine Brooks, Actor/Director
Living a life that is bold is in our DNA, but it’s by our choices and actions that we are able to truly practice and live a life that is fearless. Fearless is just another word for “living bold”.
I grew up in a small southern town on a bayou and always had dreams to move to Hollywood and make movies. A big dream for a small town girl who was destined from birth to live the Southern life of a white picket fence and ladies luncheons sipping ice tea and mint juleps at sunset. I didn’t want that life, so at 15 years old, I quit school and ran away to the city of angels.
I think it’s a good idea for kids to stay in school, but for me, it was a choice of being bold. There was nothing the small town school could offer me to support my dreams of being a film creator so I traveled to the only place I knew from the movies. Hollywood.
Being 15 and unable to get a job, I lived in my car in the parking lot of a motel. There were times I felt defeated and the boldness in my DNA was deflated. But, I didn’t give up. I was able to get a job as a tour guide on horseback. It was there I would meet a person that would give me my first shot at making movies.
It took ten years, but using the strength I had from my dreams, I was able to make a name for myself and directed an Emmy Award winning TV show as well as made two movies.
My life is a constant test to see just how bold I really am. Sometimes days are more difficult, but if you reach inside yourself deep enough you will find the courage and the stamina to make bold choices that contribute to your destiny.
